The Challenges and Dangers of Digital Nudging
35,000. That's the average number of decisions a person makes every day. Have you ever wondered how many of these are digital decisions — ones made using technology like smartphones, wearables, laptops? That also includes the ones that computers, algorithms and artificial intelligence make for us... Learn more by diving into this GOTO Book Club episode with Fabio Pereira and Linda Rising.

Mind as Code - Mindfulness for Developers and Knowledge Workers
How to be more relaxed with the crazyness of the world? How to focus more on what is really important during work and in life? How to be more resilient, when things don't work the way we wanted? And how to react smarter to a situation like that? Mindfulness is a scientifically researched practice to train the mind. It's like switching to a new, more useful, operating system. Everything becomes a bit more easy. But in this case you are not switching your OS, you are slowly training your mind to become a more useful tool. Basically you become more proficient in hacking your mind: you slowly learn the programming language your mind responds to and thus cultivate a more friendly and fruitful relationship to your mind. At work a regular mindfulness practice improves concentration, equanimity and impulse control; skills that are useful and very much needed in complex agile environments. And while mindfulness practices have been around for quite a while, it is fascinating that in the last 30 years there has been a lot of scientific research into mindfulness, separating what works from what doesn't. In this interactive talk I will share a bit of my own personal story, we will look at how mindfulness works and why it is worth practicing. We also look at some of the science behind it and do a short practice that you can take home with you. All of that using a lot of analogies to coding and there even will be a cat video. **What will the audience learn from this talk?**
You will learn what mindfulness is and in which way it is different from what you might think (It's likely less esoteric and less about relaxation than you think). You will also learn why it's beneficial for you to practice it (for life and work and programming) and take home a foundational exercise to start with. **Does it feature code examples and/or live coding?**
No **Prerequisite attendee experience level:**
[Level 100](https://gotoams.nl/2019/pages/experience-level)

What Google Learned about Creating Effective Teams

The Happy Movement: How Business Is The Key To Making The World A Happier Place
We can all agree that we want to live in a happy world. We can make slow change by teaching people the tools necessary to lead happier lives, or we can make a bigger impact by also leveraging businesses to make the world a happier place. Evan Sutter has dedicated the past 5 years of his life to exploring the topic of happiness and creating a world he is proud to leave his grandchildren with. While living in the forests of a Buddhist Monastery with his monk brother, he wrote the book "Solitude: How Doing Nothing Can Change the World" and conceived a startup to teach people the skills to live happy and full lives. He soon realized that for the sake of our planet and its people's happiness, bigger change was needed than simply teaching people the art of happiness. And, he saw business at the center of that change. Each day we have the choice of where we spend our time and money, and each day that choice has a huge impact on the kind of world we want to live in. Every time we open our wallets we cast a vote, a vote for our ideal world. We may say that we believe in environmentally-conscious and sustainable practices, fair wages for all, employee wellness programs and community-building, but we may inadvertently be supporting businesses that do not align with those beliefs. As Evan thought about this dilemma, he realized the important role business could play in increasing the happiness in the world. He wanted to find what works to create lasting, impactful change. He created his startup, Hapzly, as the first accreditation platform of its kind measuring businesses on their happiness output. The platform is designed to recognise businesses that make the world a happier place, and help inform customers, potential employees and the world in general that they are a great place to go to, do business with and work at. **What will the audience learn from this talk?**
How business is the key to making the world a happier place - how we can make our businesses better and happier, how we can improve our businesses and ensure the well-being and engagement of our employees, the happiness of our customers, and act in benevolent and responsible ways for the betterment of the communities and environments in which we operate. It's Getting Faster
Humans have always used tools to shape their environment and their lives, from stone axes to modern technology. The shift from stone tools to metal ones took millions of years. From metal tools to machines took thousands. From machines to computers, mere centuries... and it's getting faster. But why is it happening, what does it mean, and what can we do about it? In this talk we look at some different perspectives on the accelerating pace of change of technology, the implications for our lives and our ways of working, and some emerging techniques - both human and technical - to navigate an increasingly complex and confusing world. **Does it feature code examples and/or live coding?**
No **Prerequisite attendee experience level:**
[Level 100](https://gotoams.nl/2019/pages/experience-level)

Temporal Modelling
Event Storming, Event Sourcing, CQRS, messaging, distributed systems … In one way or another, they’re all about time. Traditional modelling styles, focused on things and structures, are not the primary way anymore to build modern systems that handle complexity well. Object-oriented models tend to have an uneasy relation with events happening over time. The actual business processes, the heart of how organisations operate, end up hidden in the many calls between objects. Temporal Modelling is the cure: build models and systems that make events and processes the first class building blocks of a domain model. In this talk, we’re going to look at how reasoning with time helps us better understand how to build our software. **Prerequisite attendee experience level:**
[Level 300](https://gotoams.nl/2019/pages/experience-level)

Death of the IT manager - Being a Tech Lead in a Modern IT Organisation
IT driven organisations are more and more adopting the agile way of working. Self-Organising teams are at the basis of these organisations and IT management layers are disappearing rapidly. Technical leads are pushed into the center of it all and become the key players in the transformation and growth of these organisations. In this presentation we will explain why the death of the IT manager (role) is inherent to the transformation of the organisation into agile. We will go into detail on this transformation and on the new role of the tech lead as created in the organisational model of Spotify. What is this new role about? Why is it at the heart of the agile IT organisation? What skills are required in this role as IT thought leader and how do software engineers transform into tech leads in order to drive engineering culture and “learning organisation”? Last but not least, we will address the pitfalls and what our three years’ experience as IT Chapter Leads at ING has taught us. **What will the audience learn from this talk?**
We will go into detail on this transformation and on the new role of the tech lead as created in the organisational model of Spotify. Attitude of Iteration
Challenges are a very real part of daily life. Some challenges are very apparent, like having one finger on each hand. Other challenges, are less apparent but no less of a hurdle that must be jumped. As someone who was born different and has been challenged through life, I have a very interesting view on hitting challenges head on. I also like to laugh as I deal with these challenges. In this session we will joke our way through having an attitude of iteration in how we deal with challenges in our personal lives AND in our work lives. Prepare to laugh, commiserate, and face your challenges! **What will the audience learn from this talk?**
The audience will gain an understanding of looking at life and life in technology as a challenge to be conquered and not a defeat to be mourned. **Does it feature code examples and/or live coding?**
No code or digital presentation. **Prerequisite attendee experience level:**
[Level 100](https://gotoams.nl/2019/pages/experience-level)
