Garth started coding as a teenager in the 80s. He was a full-time developer during the Celtic Tiger years before moving into education and consultancy. He ran the training team at Instil Software in Belfast for a decade before joining the Advocacy team at JetBrains.
Over the years he's taught well over 1000 courses, workshops, and seminars - using everything from CORBA to Kotlin.
Currently Garth is the Learning Consultant at Liberty IT, where he helps over 1000 technical staff (spread over three sites) maintain and extend their skill base. He contributes to the TechStart academies, Ignite hackathons, and the annual TechCon conference.
Garth is a prolific speaker, writer and co-organiser of several local conferences and meetups. When not at the whiteboard he teaches martial arts, lifts heavy weights and fights nerf wars with his kids.

Leading 3000 Developers into the Next Era of Software Engineering
For the past two years Liberty Mutual has faced a challenge. How to exploit GenAI to make our 3000 engineers more productive without compromising quality, safety, or our values. Initially we created our own ChatGPT experience (LibertyGPT), rolled out GitHub CoPilot worldwide, and designed our own SDLC process. That was the easy part.
Right now we’re tackling three interrelated opportunities. The first is AI Engineering - how do we integrate GenAI into developer pipelines to ship better software faster? The second is AI Architecture - how do we infuse AI based features into new applications to better serve our customers? The final revolves around Agentic AI and the prospect of Digital Software Engineers - can this work and if so how?
Your organisation is most likely walking a similar path. We will share with you what we have learned to date, in terms of technologies, architectures, practises and processes. There will be no artificial hype or gushing over vendors and their platforms. This will be a ‘from the trenches’ talk where we share hard won lessons.
