Retrospectives - Why Do We Need Them?

"Retrospectives - Why Do We Need Them?"
With agile development processes comes retrospectives. Some love them, some hate them, and some just accept them. Sometimes they are called a waste of time and sometimes they ARE a waste of time. They can easily turn into routine but they can also be critical to identify project problems before they become costly to fix.
How can we make retrospectives worthwhile for everyone? Could we get rid of them, if we could learn to talk to each other instead? How can we use them to save time and costs, and make better-informed decisions?
