Many engineers promoted to leadership take time to build skills in people management and are given little in the way of guidelines. There is no tech best-practice for how to hire, review performance, grow careers or promote. We do the best with what we have, but this inexperience can quickly lead to reinforcing old biases and lower belonging for those in underrepresented groups, halting their career progress.
